The spirit and freedom of the open road and power and beauty of quality engineering come together in Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Continually working with the latest design, technological and engineering innovations, Harley-Davidson, nevertheless, is firmly rooted in its tradition - a heritage of rugged quality and production excellence that makes Harley-Davidson motorcycles among the most loved in the world. That tradition started in 1903, when William Harley joined with three brothers, William, Walter and Arthur Davidson, and produced their first motorcycle. This first model was entirely hand-made and produced two horsepower, typical of its time. The men developed another motorcycle that same year, and two more the following year. In 1905, however, production "soared" to eight vehicles, and the following year, an impressive 50 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were produced. Since that time, Harley-Davidson has offered motorcycle enthusiasts a wide range of bikes. And the company's production capacity has increased dramatically; in 1998, about 150,000 bikes were produced.
